Get rid of bad smells from the drain when you’ve been away

Did it smell bad when you got back home after your vacation?

The summer holidays are almost over, and many have enjoyed their time off. But for some, an unpleasant surprise awaits them when they return home – an unpleasant smell from the floor drain of the bathroom or laundry room. It’s a problem you can easily get rid of with a NOOD water trap from Purus.

NOOD odourless water traps are included as standard in all our design floor gullies, such as Purus Line and Purus Corner. In several of our traditional floor gullies, you can change the water trap to a NOOD water trap. With NOOD, you avoid the use of chemicals that often create problems both in your pipes and in our nature.

To avoid bad smells, it is also important to keep your floor drain clean. You do this in simple steps in a couple of minutes.

Why does a bad smell arise from the floor drain?

If your floor gully is unused for a long time, such as when you are away from home for a week or two, the water trap can dry out. Then air that carries a bad smell from the sewer pipes can penetrate into your home. The water trap acts as a barrier in that there is a certain amount of water in the container that prevents odours/air from penetrating up from the drain pipes.

When the water dries out, there is nothing to prevent the bad smell from slipping through into the room. This is a  common problem in floor gullies that are seldom used, such as in vacation home or garages/storage rooms/laundries where the floor gully is often left unused for a long time and then easily dry out.

DIY tricks and old household tips

Many people use old household tips to avoid bad smells and blockages in the floor fully. Some include putting cooking oil down the drain to seal the water, using vinegar and salt, or adding chemicals to get rid of bad odours. While some of these tricks may be effective in the short term, few of them are appropriate. That e.g. pouring grease or oil into floor gulies and drains is harmful and directly inappropriate as it can cause blockages and stops. Harsh chemicals may weaken and shorten the life of pipes and floor gullies, they are also harmful to the environment and should not be flushed out with our waste water.

Purus Line has a NOOD odourless water trap under the hair strainer, which allows you to avoid bad odours from the drain even when it is unused for a while.

NOOD (NO Odour) WATER TRAP

NOOD stands for “No Odour”. It is a combined classic water trap with water mirror and a mechanical water trap that closes when no water is flowing. It effectively prevents bad odours from rising from the floor gully in two ways, even if it is left unused for a long time.

NOOD is available for all Purus design floor gullies and for most of the traditional floor gullies in our product range.

Design floor gullies from Purus are carefully developed to combine aesthetics and function. The floor drain covers are designed to give the best flow capacity to the runoff water. At the same time, they are a first line of defense in terms of catching dirt and hair.

Underneath the cover is a removable hair strainer that ensures that hair and larger particles do not fall into the water trap. The NOOD water trap is a combination of a classic water trap and a mechanical water trap, it is easy to clean with warm water and a little soap and requires minimal maintenance. It ensures a hygienic and problem-free solution for our modern bathrooms.

A practical and eco-friendly solution

By investing in a NOOD water trap or in a floor gully where this is included, you not only get a fresh and odour-free bathroom, you also contribute to reducing the use of harmful chemicals that risk damaging both our environment and your sewer lines. The NOOD trap allows you to go on holiday without having to come home to a nasty surprise in the form of a smelly bathroom, no matter how long you’ve been gone.

Clean your water trap easily and quickly!

When you have a Purus design floor gully in the shower or other floor gullies with a NOOD water trap, cleaning becomes very easy. Three steps later, it’s fresh again.

  1. Lift the strainer (use the lifting hooks provided so you don’t scratch it).
  2. Remove all hair and dirt from the hair strainer.
  3. Rinse the water trap with warm water for about 20 seconds. If it is really dirty, it can be left in a soap/hot water solution for a while before you rinse it.

Note! It is not necessary to diassemble the water trap for cleaning, but you can easily slip it by pulling lightly on the metal clip located in the trap. The NOOD trap should absolutely NOT be dismantled, then the spring mechanism will be destroyed and the water lock will no longer work as intended.

More solutions against bad odours

For those of you who have problems with bad odours, Purus also has other solutions that are better suited for, for example, sinks and waste outlets, e.g. our PUM. Read more about these here.
